Talked to an old commercial guy about pipe bending and it changed my whole approach
I was pulling wire in a new office building last month and an older sparky named Dave watched me fighting a 3-point saddle for 10 minutes. He walked over and said I was overthinking it and showed me how to use the star on my bender instead of the arrow. Turns out I had been using the wrong reference point for offsets for like 5 years. I tried his method on the next run and shaved 20 minutes off my time. Has anyone else had a senior guy correct a basic thing you thought you had down?

I gotta respectfully disagree a bit here. The star is great for certain bends but I've seen too many guys rely on it like it's magic and end up with wonky saddles on big pipe. On 3/4 and 1 inch EMT, the arrow gives me a more consistent center of bend, especially when I'm working with thick wall stuff that doesn't spring back the same as thin wall. Ive also found that the star can be off by a hair on older benders that have been dropped a few times. Did you test the star against a level and a known measurement first or just take Dave's word for it?
