Working on a 1920s house in Albany showed me why old cloth wiring needs a gentle touch.

I was replacing a fixture and the insulation crumbled at the slightest bend, so how do you guys handle these old systems without causing more damage?

Wow, I used to think it was no big deal until I saw that myself.

Diana155 is right, it's a shock when you see it up close. A lot of people forget to check the condition of the wire inside the walls, not just at the fixture. That old cloth can be totally fine in a straight run but turn to dust at any bend or staple point. You really need to plan for a full rewire if you find more than one bad spot, patching it is just asking for trouble later.

Old wiring is like a lot of things we just assume are fine until they fall apart.
