Door locks shorted out on a 20-story Otis in Chicago last Tuesday
Had a call about an elevator stuck between floors and found a frayed wire touching the door lock circuit, which took me 3 hours to trace because the prints were from 1987, anyone else deal with ancient wiring that makes no sense?

Three hours just to trace a frayed wire? That's brutal. I would have been ready to throw my meter out the window by then. 1987 prints are a nightmare, half the time they don't match what's actually in the panel. Had a similar situation in a 30 year old building where the door lock wiring went through three different junction boxes nobody labeled. Ended up just running new wire because the old stuff was so brittle it fell apart when I touched it. Elevator mechanics deserve hazard pay just for dealing with that junk.

Man I gotta disagree here, old prints are like a treasure hunt and that's half the fun lmao. Three hours to find a frayed wire? That's just called being thorough and earning your pay. If everything was perfect and labeled we'd all be out of a job.

Did the frayed wire at least have some continuity when you tested it, or was it totally intermittent? Wondering if the elevator would work fine for a while then just drop out randomly.
