Had to choose between a new hoist rope splice or a full replacement on a 15-year-old traction unit.

The splice kit was $450 and a day's work, but the full rope set was over $3k and meant a weekend shutdown. I went with the splice, and it's held for six months now with no issues. Would you guys trust a splice on a main hoist rope for a building this old, or is that asking for trouble?

Man, that's a tough call, but saving the shutdown and all that cash sounds like a win so far. Did you have a pro do the splice or was it in-house? I've seen splices last for years on older gear if they're done right, but it always makes me a little nervous on the main line. What's your plan for checking it going forward?

We had our lead tech handle it in-house, he's done a few hundred of these. The plan is a visual check every shift and a full pull test during the next scheduled maintenance in six months. It's holding fine so far, but we keep a spare section of line ready to go just in case. Nerves are normal, but a good splice on solid cable should outlast the rest of the machine.
