Heard a homeowner say 'It's just like a big elevator' about my tools
I was working on a residential lift in a fancy house near Austin last Tuesday, and the owner walks up saying, 'Oh, that's just a big elevator, right?' I laughed, but honestly, it got me thinking about how much we take safety stuff for granted. She had no clue about the rail alignments or limit switches that could kill someone if they're off by even a half inch. It made me realize how many people see this job as simple, but we all know the devil's in the details. Has anyone ever had a homeowner say something that totally missed the mark?

Nah, I gotta disagree with you there. "Just like a big elevator" is pretty accurate for 99% of the people who use it. You're acting like she needs to know about rail alignments and limit switches to ride it safely, but she doesn't. That's your job, not hers. If your install is so bad that a half inch off kills someone, that's on you, not on her for not understanding the "devil in the details." She paid for a working lift, not a masterclass in mechanical engineering. Maybe take it less personally when people don't geek out over your tools the way you do.

35 years in this trade and I've seen that half inch difference snap a cable clean.
