Mall in Phoenix with a service elevator that opens into a food court

Was doing a routine call at Metrocenter last month and rode their old service lift down to the basement. Door opens right into the back of a Cinnabon, like 3 feet from the fryer. Some kid in an apron almost got clipped by the gate. How does that pass any code review? Has anyone else dealt with an elevator that dumps you into a weird spot like that?

Man, that sounds sketchy as hell... I once got stuck in a freight elevator that opened straight into a storage closet full of mop buckets, and honestly that was better than a hot oil bath. You'd think somebody would have flagged that Cinnabon setup before anyone got hurt, but I guess the smell of cinnamon rolls covers up a lot of bad decisions. Hope that kid learned to jump back fast, cause that's one of those stories he'll be telling at family dinners forever.

Gotta say, the smell of cinnamon rolls covering up bad decisions is probably the most accurate thing I've read all week. I once tripped over my own feet walking into a job site and took out a whole stack of tiles, and my boss just shook his head like I was the biggest hazard in the building. Honestly, that kid's story is way cooler than my "I fell into a pile of grout bags" moment, which my family still brings up every Thanksgiving. At least he gets to say he survived a hot oil bath, I just get to say I have terrible balance. Some people are born for epic tales, the rest of us just learn to laugh at our own clumsiness lol.
