Old timer on a job in Des Moines showed me his trick for leveling rails with just a 4 foot level and a string line
He said 'son, stop overthinking it' and had the car running smooth in 20 minutes. Has anyone else had a old mechanic drop a simple method that changed how you work?

The string line thing is gold. Reminds me of this old diesel mechanic I met in a truck stop diner outside Omaha, he laughed at my torque wrench and just told me to feel the bolts with my fingers. Said if you can't tell by the resistance in your wrist you're not paying attention anyway (which is wild advice but he wasn't wrong). My buddy still uses a laser for door frames but I switched to a plumb bob after that and never looked back. Something about the old methods just have that stubborn logic to them, you know?
