That one inspection in Denver where the guy told me my rails were .030 out and I swore he was wrong.
He pulled out a worn-down micrometer instead of a digital one and showed me the gap right there at the third-floor bracket, and I ended up spending four hours re-shimming the whole section.

Snapped a tape measure at the third floor of a walkup once because I got so frustrated with a similar situation. Old school inspector, he had this beat up caliper that looked like it survived a war. He kept telling me my gaps were off by almost a hair and I just could not see it with my eye. After an hour of arguing, I pulled out my digital gauge and sure enough, he was right on the money. Learned that day never to judge a tool by its rust, just like never to judge a guy by his worn out shoes.

That old timer with the beat up caliper sounds exactly like a guy I used to work with who could eyeball a 1/16th gap from across the room. Had this one foreman who'd pull out a rusty, dented framing square that was older than me and prove my corners were off by a few degrees every single time. Still humbles me to think about how much precision those guys carried around in their heads without any digital backup.
