Buildings settle and make noise all the time, especially old ones like that. A freight elevator that's been running for decades is bound to have some creaks and groans. Unless there's actual sparks flying or it's grinding metal on metal, it's probably just normal wear and tear. Did you report it to the building management yet or just hear it yourself?

You builtings settle and make noise all the time" sure, but this is a freight elevator, not a house. I heard that specific elevator got retrofitted in the 90s with a hydraulic system that wasn't really designed for the weight it was carrying. A friend of mine worked as a maintenance guy downtown and said those old Sears elevators have a bad habit of the guide rails getting warped from years of temperature swings and moisture. That could be the weird noises, the shoes scraping against bent rails. Might be worth checking the shaft for any signs of water damage or rust if you can get access.
