The time a building manager asked me to 'fix' the elevator with a hammer
I was working on an old Otis in a building on 3rd street in downtown Cleveland, and the manager came up holding a claw hammer. He said, 'Can't you just give it a whack like they do in the movies?' I told him that only works in cartoons, not on a 1980s traction machine with a seized governor. He didn't believe me until I showed him the 200 page manual. Has anyone else had a customer suggest something that actually dangerous?

Yeah, because "magic hammer fix" usually ends with a trip to the ER.

Yeah the "just whack it" thing is way too common. Had a guy with a stuck circuit breaker once who handed me a screwdriver and said "pry it open" like that wouldn't fry me instantly. People watch too many movies and think real mechanical stuff works on magic.
