Vent: I'm sure fancy diagnostic tools are hurting our skills

It hit me when an old timer fixed a noisy hoist motor by ear while my scanner showed nothing wrong. These gadgets give false leads that waste hours on wild goose chases. We're losing the feel for the machinery that comes from hands-on work. Now I start with a physical check before even plugging in the computer.

Totally! I read an article in a trade magazine about this exact thing. They said relying on computers too much is making us forget the basics.

Completely agree, and @kevin179 pointing out that trade magazine article is spot on. It's like we're training ourselves to trust a screen more than our own senses, which is backwards. Starting with a physical check sounds like the only sane way to work now. Those false leads from the gadgets can eat up a whole morning chasing nothing. The hands-on feel for a machine's rhythm and sound just can't be replaced by a scanner reading.
