Why does nobody talk about door contact alignment on old Otis units

I was working on a 1978 Otis unit downtown last Wednesday, the one in the old courthouse building. The door contacts kept giving me fits, so I finally took a level to the header and realized the whole thing was out by almost a quarter inch. Once I shimmed it back straight, the car leveled perfect and the doors stopped bouncing. Has anyone else run into misaligned headers throwing off contact readings on older models?

1978 Otis units were built with enough slop that a quarter inch isn't usually your real problem.

You ever had to double-check the level with a six-foot straight edge on one of those? The car guides are probably worn enough that a quarter-inch gap turns into a half-inch bounce by the fifth floor. Should look at the gibs and rails before you touch anything else.
