My buddy made a crazy point about Firefly last night

He said the show didn't die because of bad ratings, it died because Fox never knew how to sell a western in space. That stuck with me because I always blamed the Friday night time slot, but maybe the network just didn't get what they had. Any of you ever hear a take that made you totally rethink a canceled show?

Man that take actually makes a lot of sense... Fox never knew how to sell a show that blended genres like that. They kept marketing it as just another sci-fi thing when the real heart was the dusty frontier vibe. The network probably looked at the numbers and panicked instead of letting it find its audience. Friday night was a death slot for sure but your buddy might be onto something bigger.

What gets me is nobody talks about how the show was actually ahead of its time with the whole "weird west" thing. Now folks can't get enough of that blend, but back then it was too strange for the suits to wrap their heads around.
