Hot take: Most people in this network overvalue the handshake and undervalue the follow-up

I saw a guy at a startup mixer in Austin last month swap cards with 30 people but never emailed a single one. Two weeks later, I followed up with just 5 contacts from that same event and landed a solid referral that led to a $3,000 deal. Have you ever tracked how many leads you actually close from these events vs what you think you will?

Wow, did that referral come from a cold follow-up or did you already know them?

Actually that referral came from an old client I hadn't talked to in months.

Oh man, I literally just read something about this the other day! Yeah @leep89, I saw this study that said most big referrals come from people you haven't talked to in a while, not from your regular contacts. Crazy how that works out sometimes.
