I spent $500 on a local chamber of commerce membership about five years ago. It was a total waste for me.

Man, does that ever sound familiar? I had a buddy who did the same thing with his small auto detailing shop. He went to a few of their breakfast meetups and said it was just a room full of people trying to sell stuff to each other, nobody who actually needed his service. He never got a single job from it and felt pretty burned. I mean, maybe it works for some types of businesses, but for him it was just throwing money away.

Yeah my cousin had that happen with his lawn care thing, total waste of time and cash.

I used to think those groups were a good idea, like a fast way to meet local business owners. Then my friend joined one for her pet sitting service. She paid the fee and went to meetings for six months. All she got was a guy trying to sell her toner for a printer she didn't own and a realtor who wanted to trade a house listing for dog walking. She didn't book a single new client from it. Totally changed my view on the whole thing.
