Rant: The local chamber mixer I wrote off actually paid off

I always figured those chamber of commerce mixers were just people passing business cards and eating bad finger food. I skipped them for three years. Then last month I went to one downtown because I had nothing better to do on a Tuesday. Met a guy who does office cleaning for half the rate I was paying my current vendor, and he handles 12 buildings in my area. Has anyone else found real value in a networking group they were ignoring?

Did you actually do the math on the rates though? Office cleaning companies usually bundle products and supplies into the quote, so half the rate might mean they're using cheaper stuff or cutting corners somewhere.

Friend of mine hired a crew that was way under market rate and within a month they were using Dollar Tree glass cleaner and had nicked up half his desks. @shah.ben nailed it, the cheap quotes always hide the corners they're cutting.
