Figured out I was over-exfoliating clients for 2 years thanks to a dermatologist friend

I had this routine down pat - double cleanse, chemical exfoliant, mask, moisturizer. Felt like a pro. Then a friend who's a dermatologist came by my studio in Portland last month and watched me work. She pulled me aside and asked why I was using a glycolic acid toner on someone who just had a retinol peel. Turns out I was breaking down their moisture barrier without even realizing it. The redness I thought was just reaction was actually damage. She showed me how to check for it - tight feeling after cleansing, tiny bumps, that kind of thing. Now I ask every client about their home routine before I do anything. Has anyone else had a similar moment where a doc or skin expert called out something big you were missing?

Read that over-exfoliating just makes skin worse in the long run.

Well, at least you were giving them the full spa experience on their way to leather face status, right?
