Overheard a client on the phone about her old skincare routine

She was telling a friend she used to scrub her face raw with a walnut shell scrub every night. Made me realize how much basic education we still need to do, even with all the info online. Anyone else have a client story that shows a common misconception you're still fighting?

Actually that's not entirely accurate about the micro-tears thing lol. The original study everyone cites was done on one person in the 90s and it's been taken way out of context. Walnut shells are definitely too harsh for most people's faces, but the idea that any physical scrub causes permanent micro-tears isn't really backed by good science. The real issue is that people use them way too often and press way too hard. A gentle physical exfoliant used once a week on normal skin is totally fine for most people. The whole "micro-tears are permanent damage" thing has been repeated so much it's become accepted as fact when the evidence is super weak.

Oh my gosh, the walnut shell thing makes me cringe. Just read an article where a derm said physical scrubs like that can cause micro-tears, especially used daily. It's wild how the "no pain, no gain" idea sticks around for skin. Some people still think tight, squeaky-clean skin means it's really clean, when that's often a sign of damage.
