Stumbled on a stat about how much skin care routines have changed since 1990

I was looking through some old beauty magazines my mom kept from the 80s and 90s the other day. Found this one from 1991 that had a full page ad for a toner made with alcohol as the first ingredient. It got me curious so I looked up how many steps the average routine had back then versus now. Turns out women in 1990 used about 3 products on average, and now it's closer to 8 or 9 according to a study from last year. That blew my mind because I remember my mom just using moisturizer and maybe a cleanser. Now I've got like 12 bottles on my shelf and half of them are for different skin concerns. Has anyone else noticed how much more complicated our routines have gotten compared to what we learned in school?

My friend started dating this guy who used 14 products every night and she had to wait 30 minutes to use the bathroom.

The guy sounds like he's prepping for a chemical warfare suit-up, not a date. I knew someone who had a whole 10-step routine for his beard oil alone (gotta keep those whiskers hydrated, you know). It's wild what people will do for the "glow" these days.

Ngl I used to roll my eyes at guys with elaborate skincare routines, thought it was just influencer nonsense. But then my buddy showed me his setup because he’s got crazy acne scars and it’s actually helped him a ton. He went from feeling like crap about his face to actually leaving the house without a hat on. So yeah, maybe some of it's overkill but if it makes people feel good, whatever.
