Can we talk about returning a half-used bag of mulch to the big box store

I bought a yard of mulch from Lowe's two weeks ago for my flower beds, used about 60% of it, then found a deal on a better brand at a local nursery. I returned the open bag to Lowe's and got a full refund, no questions asked. But now I'm sitting here thinking about how the worker probably just tosses that half-damp bag into the dumpster behind the garden center. Is that a minor ethical slip on my end, or is that just how the system works for big stores that write off waste anyway?

Oh I did the same thing with a bag of soil from Home Depot last month and felt so guilty about it...

wendy_bell83 I get feeling guilty but honestly this is just part of a bigger thing I've noticed lately where we all treat big stores like they're bottomless pits. You refund a half-used bag of mulch, someone else returns a half-eaten bag of chips, and the store just eats the loss because it's cheaper than arguing. But then we turn around and get mad at the same stores for raising prices or having wasteful policies. It's like we're all caught in this weird loop where we take advantage of their system but also complain when the system gets strained. I saw a guy at Target once return a Christmas tree in January because the needles were falling off, and the cashier just took it back without blinking. Feels like we're all just playing a game where nobody really wins but the store's policy keeps letting us play.
