My $0 fix for a squeaky door saved my marriage sanity
I had this one door in our hallway that squeaked like crazy every time you opened it. My wife was about to lose it after 6 months of hearing it. I tried WD-40 but that only lasted 2 weeks before the squeak came back. Finally I just rubbed a bar of soap along the hinge pins and it's been silent for 3 months now. Cost me nothing since we already had the soap under the sink. Has anyone else found a random household item that fixed a nagging problem better than the obvious stuff?

WD-40 is more of a degreaser than a real lubricant honestly.

And the weird thing is, WD-40 actually works pretty well as a cleaner for bike chains before you put real lube on, but most people just spray it on and never follow up with anything else. It dries out too fast to be any good for long term protection, especially on things like door hinges where you need something that sticks around for months. If you're stuck in a pinch, it'll get you moving again, but definitely not something to rely on for regular maintenance.
