My barista friend told me she hates when people order 'just a water' without buying anything else
She said it feels like using the cafe as a public fountain, but now I'm overthinking every time I'm thirsty downtown lol. Is it actually rude to just ask for a water cup?

Why not just leave a tip for the water?

Businesses provide water as a basic courtesy. It's not rude to accept that offer, and you shouldn't feel bad about it. The barista is getting paid to be there either way.

Feel you on this one. I always feel kinda guilty grabbing free water even though logically I know it's fine. Maybe I just overthink stuff like this but it's hard to shake that feeling.
