That awkward moment I let a friend cut in line at the grocery store

I was at the Walmart on 3rd street last Tuesday, standing in line with a full cart of stuff for dinner. My friend Sarah came up with just a gallon of milk and asked to cut in, and I said sure without really thinking. The guy behind me got super huffy and made a comment about people who think they're better than everyone else. But isn't helping someone out in a small way just basic decency? Has anyone else had a line-cutting situation blow up on them like that?

And honestly, I'm the kind of person who would probably trip over my own feet trying to speed through the self-checkout, so letting someone cut in is my one small victory for the day. The guy behind you was probably just hangry anyway, I've learned to ignore those grocery store meltdowns because I've had my fair share of almost crying over the last box of cereal. At least your friend was quick about it, my buddy once asked to cut in and then took forever counting out exact change for a pack of gum.

Oh man, that's definitely one of those little moments that can turn awkward fast. I think the guy behind you was probably just having a rough day and took it out on you both. Helping a friend grab one thing is just being neighborly, and most reasonable people would let it slide without making a scene.
