The time I tried to save money by sharpening my own lawn mower blade vs paying the hardware store $8

I spent two hours with a file and ended up with a blade so uneven the mower shook like a washing machine on spin cycle. Took it to Ace Hardware on Main Street and they had it balanced and sharp in 10 minutes for less than a burger. Has anyone else learned the hard way that some cheap fixes just aren't worth the hassle?

Ever stop to think that wobbly blade might've been doing a better job slicing up the grass clippings for mulch than a perfectly balanced one? I've noticed my lawn looks less brown when the mower's a little rough, since it's tearing instead of cutting clean, and the pieces break down faster. So maybe that two hours was a win for your soil, just not your sanity.

Ngl @paigeg22 you're making me feel way better about my own janky mower setup. Honestly I had the same thing happen last summer, my blades were toast and it was just ripping the grass but my lawn actually looked greener. Tbh I think we're onto something here.
