Update: Our street's recycling bin is always contaminated with non-recyclables.
It ruins the effort for everyone who tries.

You mentioned the bin gets "contaminated with non-recyclables," but sometimes the problem is recyclables that aren't clean. A greasy pizza box or a jar with leftover pasta sauce can ruin a whole batch. The sorting facility might just toss the entire load if there's too much food residue. It helps to give things a quick rinse before they go in the bin.

You're totally right, @hayes.linda. My recycling bin is probably a biohazard some weeks. I once tried to recycle a peanut butter jar I only gave a lazy swipe with a paper towel, and I'm pretty sure that jar is why our whole neighborhood got a sternly-worded flyer.

But that's a huge waste of water right there.
