Rant: Everyone else's way of organizing spice racks is inefficient
Last month at a friend's dinner party in Portland, I watched her spend 3 minutes digging through a drawer for cumin while her sauce burned. People love those tiered shelves or magnetic tins, but they just hide stuff in layers. I hang all my spices in labeled mesh bags on a single hook inside a cabinet door, visible at a glance. It took $12 and ten minutes to set up, and I can grab any jar in two seconds flat. Why does nobody else try vertical storage for spices instead of stacking them wasted?

Stop calling it "vertical storage" like it's some new thing... that's just hanging stuff. Your setup sounds smart for a single cabinet but it'd drive me crazy in my kitchen where I'd have to open the door every time. Actually, what works best depends on how you cook and what you're cooking.

Fair point @shane751, but I actually see it the other way. Opening a door for a second is way less annoying to me than digging through a deep drawer for a small spatula, at least in my experience. The vertical storage thing works best when you only use that cabinet for the tools you grab all the time, not every single pot and pan you own. Your mileage may vary, but I found it cuts down on clutter on the counter and keeps things easy to find without having to shuffle through a pile of tongs and ladles. It really just depends on how much stuff you have and how often you reach for it.
