Threw $40 down the drain on a cheap drain snake that broke on the first clog

Bought a plastic drum auger from the grocery store last month and it snapped inside the pipe on my kitchen sink, had to call a plumber for $150 to dig both pieces out. Anyone else learn the hard way that spending a little more upfront on a metal snake saves you big later?

My buddy Mike bought the same cheap plastic snake last year and it snapped off in his bathroom sink pipe at midnight. He spent two hours fishing the broken pieces out with a bent coat hanger and still had to pay a plumber forty bucks to finish the job. He learned real quick that the extra twenty bucks for a metal auger would have saved him a ton of headache.

Oh man, did Mike use the crank handle or try to muscle it? I've seen those plastic snakes snap in half when people try to twist them too hard on a tough clog.
