My dishwasher flooded the kitchen because I ignored a simple fix

Last Tuesday I ran the dishwasher before work and came home to a puddle spreading across the linoleum. I thought the seal was shot or the hose had a crack. Turned out the filter was completely clogged with food bits and grease, so water backed up and leaked out the front. I cleaned it out in five minutes with an old toothbrush and some vinegar. Now I set a reminder to scrub it every two months. Anyone else have a hidden cause behind a major mess like this?

That filter got me too last month, funny how one small part causes most of our appliances headaches.

Appreciate you sharing this but I gotta disagree with calling it a hidden cause. The filter getting clogged is basically the number one reason dishwashers flood, it's not some mystery. People skip checking that part for months and then act surprised when water ends up on the floor. You caught it quick so that's good but next time maybe save yourself the trouble and check the filter before you assume the machine is toast.
