Overheard a guy at the coffee shop say he leaves his phone on the counter while he showers to 'train his focus'. I used to think that was nuts, but now I get it.

My old roommate used to do something similar. He would put his phone in a drawer and set a kitchen timer for an hour before he could check it. At first I thought it was a bit much... like just have some self control. But he said the timer made it a real rule, not just a thought. I started doing it when I need to actually read a book. It feels silly but it works.

How many timers do you think I've bought and lost because of this? I have one for my phone, one for my laptop, and I still end up checking the fridge like it's sending me notifications. It's embarrassing how well it works though, like treating my own brain like a toddler that needs a schedule.

That "real rule, not just a thought" thing is so true, I lock my apps with a timer too.
