Tried using coffee grounds in my garden and ended up with mold everywhere

I heard coffee grounds were good for soil so I dumped a bunch from my morning brew around my tomato plants last week. Next thing I know there's this gross fuzzy mold growing on top of the dirt. Learned the hard way that you gotta let them dry out first or mix them in deep. My tomatoes are fine but my yard looks like a science experiment. Anyone else have a gardening hack backfire on them like this?

Actually coffee grounds do work fine if you mix them in instead of leaving them on top.

Yeah mixing them in makes a big difference honestly. I used to just dump them on top and it would get all moldy and gross after a few days. Spreading them around the soil or digging in a little really helps them break down faster and keeps the smell down too. Plus the worms seem to find them easier when they're mixed in. I started doing it that way last spring and my tomatoes went crazy.
