Heard a young guy at the feed store say he only uses a rasp for touch-ups now

He said his whole shop has switched to a belt grinder for almost all shaping, which got me thinking about how we used to do everything by hand. I still have my old Nicholson rasps from my first kit in '98. Anyone else still doing most of their finishing the old way, or has that ship sailed?

My shop teacher in '02 swore by hand tools for developing feel. I still break out my old rasps for small projects, but my belt sander has definitely seen more action this decade. Guess I'm only half a purist at this point.

That belt sander vs rasp ratio is interesting... what made you finally lean more toward power tools after starting with hand tools? Was it just the time savings or did you feel like you weren't losing any of that "feel" your teacher talked about. I'm curious if the half-and-half approach actually gives you the best of both worlds or if it's more about convenience.

My grandpa's old rasp is still in a coffee can somewhere.
