Overheard a vet at the county fair say 'a good trim is better than any shoe' and I've been thinking about it all week
He was talking to a horse owner about a navicular case, and it really hit home for me. I've seen too many folks reach for a shoe as a first fix when the real issue is in the hoof prep. Anyone else lean more on trimming these days?

Yeah I've been through that with my own horse, it's a rough road watching them struggle. You're spot on that a good trim can make all the difference though, it's easy to forget the basics when you're looking for a quick fix.

Wait, they were talking about a navicular horse at a county fair? That's a weird place for that chat.

My cousin's horse got diagnosed with navicular last spring, so that word always makes me cringe. It's such a tough, painful thing for the animal. You're right, @the_robin, a county fair seems like a strange spot for that heavy talk, maybe they were looking at the draft horse pulls or something. Those conversations just pop up anywhere horse people gather, even when you're trying to enjoy funnel cake. It's a real downer to overhear when you're just out for a fun day, isn't it?
