Question about a neighbor who watches every move during shoeing
My neighbor has a mare I trim every six weeks, and he always hovers close, suggesting I try a different rasp technique. From what I've seen, his way could make the hoof wall too thin for comfort. Take this with a grain of salt, but I'm looking for input on how to chat about this without upsetting him. Any similar stories or tips would help.

Honestly, I've seen his method lead to chips that just don't hold up.

I'd start by pointing out that thin walls often split or flare out. I've seen that exact rasp technique lead to chips along the quarter. You could mention you're aiming for a balanced trim that holds up between visits, and his method might not last. It's a tough spot when they watch so close.

Ever feel like you're giving a live demo to the world's most invested audience? I once had a guy basically breathing down my neck while I worked, and I finally said something like, "If I mess this up, I promise it's on me and my dumb hands." It kinda broke the ice. Maybe try asking if he's worried about something specific, then you can explain your method is about keeping enough wall there so it doesn't crack before the next trim.
