I used to think asymmetrical hems were just a weird trend

Last month I was sketching a simple dress for a friend in Austin and kept hitting a wall with the design. She sent me a photo of a vintage Issey Miyake piece from the 80s with this wild, off-kilter hem that somehow looked perfect. I tried a 4 inch longer hem on just the left side of my sketch and it completely changed the flow of the piece, made it way more interesting to look at. Anyone else have a designer or a specific piece that made you totally flip on a style you used to hate?

That story about the Issey Miyake piece changing your mind is cool. For me, it was the opposite. I saw a lot of those uneven hems in stores and they just looked messy, like someone forgot to finish the job. I tried on a jacket with one once and it felt awkward, like it was always getting caught on things. Sometimes a trend is just a trend, and it's okay if it doesn't click for you.

Yeah, the "messy like someone forgot" part from @king.aaron is so real. I get that with a lot of deconstructed stuff, like those jeans with the giant unfinished seams on the outside. It just looks like a factory mistake, not fashion. But then I saw a skirt with a really deliberate, sharp uneven hem, and it made sense. It was clearly meant to be that way, not just sloppy. I guess it depends on the piece and the execution. Some of it is just trying too hard.
