My aunt told me to never put pockets in a formal dress, but my client in Denver specifically asked for them and loved the result.

What's a piece of 'standard' design advice you've been given that you ended up breaking on purpose?

Honestly the whole "never mix black and brown" thing... my closet is basically a mud puddle now and I love it. Got told it was a fashion crime for years but some rules are just begging to be broken. Guess I'm a wanted man in the style police department...

My grandpa's black leather belt with brown pants looked sharp in the 70s.

Right there with you, man. I have this pair of black boots that I wear with basically every brown pair of pants I own (it's a whole vibe, trust me). My mom still gives me the side eye when I walk out the door, but I think she's starting to come around. The whole "never mix black and brown" rule always felt like something from my grandma's era, you know? Like, why limit yourself when you can just lean into the messy, earthy tones and own it. Glad I'm not the only fugitive from the fashion police.
