My custom corset boning snapped during a fitting in my studio last Tuesday, which was a real surprise.

In my experience, you don't expect the 7mm synthetic whalebone to give out when someone just takes a deep breath, so now I'm looking for a more flexible but strong alternative, has anyone else had luck with spiral steel?

Is it really that big of a deal? Synthetic boning snaps sometimes, it's just plastic. I've had a few break over the years and just stitched in a new piece. Spiral steel is way overkill unless you're making a tightlacing piece for daily wear. For a regular costume or fashion corset, just use a better quality synthetic or maybe try spring steel.

Honestly, spiral steel is a total game changer for any serious corset, not just tightlacing.

My last costume corset with plastic boning gave out after three events... felt like a cheap umbrella in a storm. Paul_fisher19 might be okay with that repair cycle, but I'd rather not have a wardrobe malfunction mid-ren faire. Spiral steel just feels secure, like it actually respects the physics of my torso.
