My grandma's fabric advice actually ruined my first design

She told me to always prewash cotton before cutting, but I used a vintage rayon blend she didn't recognize. After I spent 2 days sewing a dress, it shrunk 3 inches in the wash and the seams puckered bad. I should have tested a swatch first or asked someone who sews with modern synthetics. Has anyone else had family advice backfire on a project like that?

Grandma's not the real problem here, it's the way older generations treat all fabric advice like it's universal law. Rayon is basically a different species from cotton and behaves more like a temperamental houseplant than cloth. My mother-in-law still insists on ironing everything on high heat and I've watched her melt a polyester blouse into a stiff wrinkled sheet while she insisted it was just "being stubborn." The real issue is nobody in that generation ever learned to identify fiber content by burn testing or even reading care labels. They just memorized rules from the 1950s and never updated.

And did she double down when you showed her what happened, or did she actually admit that maybe her rule doesn't work for every fabric? Because in my experience, grandmas get real defensive when their golden rules backfire. I had a similar thing happen with my aunt's "always cut on the bias" advice for a knit jersey, ended up with a wavy mess.
