Saw something at the Portland art museum that changed my view on fabric use
I was in Portland last month and went to the modern art wing. They had this huge textile piece that was just a plain rectangle of wool, maybe 8 feet wide, hung on a wall. Everyone was calling it a bold statement, but honestly, it looked like someone just pinned up a blanket. I think we give too much credit to simple things just because they're in a gallery. Has anyone else seen fashion ideas in art that felt overhyped?

Read an article once that called it the "white wall effect." The same piece in a garage sale would be junk, but put it in a clean gallery with a fancy title and suddenly it's deep. Makes you wonder who's really being sold something.

Ugh, that's so true. But it makes me wonder... if the artist just pinned up a blanket, what's stopping any of us from doing the same? Is the real art just the act of getting it into the museum in the first place? Like, is the statement just about who gets to decide what art is?
