Showerthought: my friend said 'streetwear is just expensive basics' and it got me stuck

We were at a cafe in Denver and my friend pointed at a guy in a $400 hoodie and said that. It hit me because I've been sketching a new line and I realized a lot of my ideas were just adding a logo to a plain tee or joggers. It made me question if I was designing anything new or just making pricey versions of simple stuff. I spent like 3 hours that night looking at my old sketches and most of them felt lazy. Now I'm trying to think of ways to add real design, like interesting cuts or fabric mixes, instead of just slapping graphics on. Has anyone else had a moment where they felt their own work was missing a real idea?

Remember my buddy who makes custom patches, he got super into making these crazy detailed ones for basic jackets. He showed me his book and I was like dude, these are just normal jackets with fancy patches, you're not really designing the jacket itself. It kinda hit him the same way and he started messing with the actual jacket shapes instead.

Your friend's comment cuts right to the core of it. When you looked back at your sketches, did you see a pattern in what you were adding, like always putting the logo in the same spot, or was the "lazy" feeling more about not changing the base garment at all?

Makes you wanna slap a logo on that lazy feeling and call it a design choice.
