Spent 3 hours tailoring a thrifted blazer and the zipper blew out on first wear
Picked up this nice wool blazer from a Goodwill in Portland for $12. Spent Sunday taking in the sides, shortening the sleeves, the whole deal. Put it on Monday morning to go to a consultation and when I bent down to tie my shoe, the back zipper just split right open. Tore the fabric too. That's what I get for not checking the zipper teeth before I started cutting. Anyone else ever put a ton of work into altering something only to have a hidden flaw wreck it?

The zipper teeth on thrifted pieces can look fine but be totally dried out from age and cheap dry cleaning chemicals. I always run a bar of soap along the zipper track on vintage stuff now before I even try it on.

I started doing the same thing after I wrecked a zipper on a vintage Levi's jacket. Pulled it right off the track and had to get the whole thing replaced. Now I rub a candle stub on the teeth before I even try stuff on at the thrift. Keeps them from grabbing and tearing. Also started checking the zipper pull itself for any wobble or cracks before I buy.
