Tried two different ways to finish the neckline on my linen dress

I made a bias binding from the same fabric for one version, and used a pre-made cotton bias tape from JoAnn for the other. The self-made binding took an extra hour but lays completely flat, while the store tape puckered a bit after washing. Has anyone found a good middle ground for a clean finish that doesn't add so much time?

Honestly, my middle ground usually involves a lot of swearing and then just making the binding anyway. I tell myself the store tape will be faster, but then I spend that saved hour picking out puckered stitches. My last project looked like a toddler applied the bias tape after a sugar rush. Pre-washing is smart, but I'm usually too impatient and just dive in.

Have you tried pre-washing the store-bought tape before you sew it? That can help with the puckering.
