Unpopular opinion: Fast fashion fabrics actually teach you more about fit than expensive materials

I was talking to a tailor at a shop in Brooklyn last month who said cheap polyester drapes in a way that forces you to learn REAL construction techniques. He claimed $5/yard fabric shows every mistake while high-end wool hides them. Who else thinks working with budget materials makes you a BETTER designer?

casey_lane73 that marathon in concrete shoes analogy hits close to home. I once made a whole dress out of this nasty $3 a yard poly chiffon that looked like a sad shower curtain. The seams puckered so bad it looked like the dress was having a nervous breakdown. But you know what, after that mess I finally figured out how to properly grade seams and use a walking foot. Now when I splurge on silk or wool, it feels like cheating because everything just falls into place. Did you ever have a fabric disaster that actually taught you something useful?

$5 a yard polyester is like training for a marathon in concrete shoes. Sure you'll hurt but you'll learn real fast what not to do.
