Was at the art museum in Cleveland and saw a painting from the 1800s with this crazy textured dress. Got me thinking about modern fabrics that could mimic that look.

Honestly seems like a lot of effort to copy an old painting's texture. Modern fabric is fine as it is, comfortable and easy to care for. That historical look probably came from a bunch of impractical layers and stiff material. Recreating it now would just be for a photo or a costume, not real life. The painting is cool to look at, but maybe some looks are best left in the past.

Ever see a friend try to wear a historical outfit to a party? They looked amazing but couldn't sit down all night!

That Cleveland painting texture probably took three layers of petticoats and a prayer. HugoBarnes is right about the comfort issue, but I'd wear a potato sack if it looked that cool in photos. Modern fabric tech could absolutely fake it with some clever weaving and a stiff spray. The real trick is making it so you can actually move without sounding like a suit of armor. Some of us are willing to trade a little comfort for looking like a painting for a night.
