Hot take: I was wrong about using a skid steer for every post hole in rocky ground.

Watching a crew in Boulder hand-dig and bar out a boulder for 45 minutes convinced me that sometimes the old way is faster than waiting for a machine rental that just bounces off the rock.

Used to think a machine was always the answer. Seeing that crew work changed my mind, sometimes you just need a bar and some muscle.

We hit a shelf of granite last year in Colorado Springs. The mini-ex just sat there and chattered, but two guys with spud bars had it out in twenty minutes.

My buddy in Montana had a backhoe bounce right off a buried slab of concrete. They ended up using a digging iron and a sledge to break it up by hand, which was way faster than trying to get another machine in there. Sometimes the old ways just work better for that kind of job.
