Shoutout to the guy who showed me how to brace a corner post with a deadman
I was putting up a 6 foot privacy fence out near Austin last spring and my corners kept pulling after a week. This old timer who was framing next door walked over and showed me how to dig a trench and anchor a deadman brace into the concrete. I tried it on my next job and those posts havent budged an inch in 8 months now. He used a 4 foot piece of rebar and some leftover wire to tie it all together. Has anyone else tried this trick or do you just pour extra concrete and hope for the best?

Just dig the hole deeper and pour more concrete and hope for the best. That's worked out so well for my first three corners that I'm thinking about starting a support group for leaning fences. Deadman braces sound like something out of a pirate movie but I might actually try it next time instead of praying to the fence gods every time the wind picks up. That rebar trick sounds way too clever for me but I'm willing to look like a fool if it means my posts stay upright. Did he give you any secret handshake to go with the lesson or is that part of the premium package?

My buddy tried the extra concrete method on his fence outside San Antonio... six months later he had a fence that looked like it was trying to do the limbo. He finally ripped it all out and did the deadman brace thing @riverm48, and now the only movement is from his dogs digging under it.
