Spent 4 hours yesterday trying to get a post level on a slope in Tacoma. The ground was pure glacial till.

It was a 6-foot cedar privacy job. Every time I thought I had a hole set, the gravel would shift. Ended up having to dig wider and pour a concrete collar for each post. What's your go-to method for unstable soil like that?

Pure glacial till" sounds dramatic, but was a concrete collar really necessary for a six foot fence?

That's just how everything feels lately, like building on shifting ground.
