That time I set a post on a hidden boulder

I was putting in a new fence line last week. I dug the hole like usual, about two feet deep. Didn't think to probe for rocks first. When I poured the concrete, it seemed fine. But after it set, the post was wobbly. A few days later, a storm came through and the whole section tilted. Turns out, there was a big rock right under the post base. Now I always check the bottom of each hole before mixing concrete.

Nature's way of telling you that rock really didn't want a fence there. It waited patiently through the digging and pouring just to give your post a wobbly housewarming gift. Between hidden boulders and sneaky knots in the wood, it's a wonder any fence stays upright. What did you end up doing, digging the whole thing out or just working around it?

We had a post shear off clean at ground level once. The concrete was perfect, but the 4x4 itself had a hidden knot right where it met the footing. A heavy snow load just popped it. Now I sight down every post for grain flaws before it even goes in the hole.

Dug up a rusty bike frame last summer, totally weird.
