Took me 6 hours to figure out a gate that wouldn't sag

I was working on a job in Toledo last week, building a 12-foot double gate for a driveway. I thought I had everything level and braced right, but after I hung the hinges the thing sagged a solid 2 inches on the latch side. I spent forever trying to shim the hinges and adjust the posts before I realized the real problem was the top rail wasn't welded tight enough to the frame. Has anyone else had a gate fight them this bad or was I just having a dumb day?

Man that sounds rough, six hours is a long time to fight a gate. I think we've all been there where you're so sure the problem is one thing and it turns out to be something totally different. The top rail thing is sneaky because everything looks fine until you put weight on it. I bet you were ready to just throw the whole thing in the trash by the time you figured it out. At least now you'll never forget to check that weld first next time.

Wait, six hours? For a gate? You spent six hours fighting a weld on the top rail? That's insane. I would have thrown the whole thing in the truck and drove it off a cliff after hour three. How did you not just cave in and start hacking at it with a grinder halfway through?
