Rant: My sauerkraut went totally pink on me last Tuesday

I had a big jar of cabbage fermenting for about 8 days in my pantry. Came back from work and the whole top layer was this weird pink color, not the crisp white I expected. I panicked and dumped the whole 2-liter jar, thinking it was a total fail. Later, I read online that it can happen if the cabbage isn't fully submerged. Anyone have a good trick for keeping everything under the brine?

Yeah, the pink stuff is just a harmless yeast. I use a small glass weight to keep everything pushed down under the liquid.

Yeah @leep89 was right, I've saved a batch with a ziplock bag full of brine pressing it down.
