I was dead set on a new build until I saw a 1950s ranch in person

The inspection found a few things, but the realtor said 'the bones are solid' and the $15k lower price tag made the work worth it. Anyone else get talked out of their original plan by actually walking through a place?

Remember when I was so sure I wanted a modern condo? Then I walked into a split level that smelled like old carpet and my whole plan fell apart. The realtor said it had "good bones" which I learned just means the walls won't fall down while you're fixing everything else. I spent the next three years learning way too much about plumbing and wallpaper removal. That lower price tag is just the first of many, many checks you'll write.

Yeah, that "bones are solid" line is a classic. I read an article where a structural engineer said that phrase is basically realtor code for "the expensive stuff to fix is okay, but get ready for a lot of smaller, annoying projects." The lower price tag is great, but you have to really budget for those updates.
